Being emerging health leaders, we have all asked ourselves “What sort of experiences and skills are valuable or necessary for me to become a successful leader?” Join us for an exciting dialogue with Barbara Kaminsky, CEO of the Canadian Cancer Society BC and Yukon Division. Barbara will share her career trajectory within a leadership capacity. This discussion will also shed light on contrasts that exist between public, private, or non-profit health organizations regarding leadership positions, qualifications, or dynamics. Lastly, Barbara will speak to how organizations groom leaders of the future like you!

Barbara Kaminsky, BA, MSW, MSc, CHE
Adjunct Professor, UBC
CEO, Canadian Cancer Society BC & Yukon
Chair of BC Healthy Living Alliance (BCHLA)

Barbara Kaminsky has made a significant contribution in cancer control in BC and the Yukon over the seventeen years that she has proficiently led the organization as CEO. She took up the position with the Canadian Cancer Society in 1994 after working in healthcare management as Vice President of Clinical Services at Surrey Memorial Hospital; head of a health care management consulting group, and Administrator of Richmond’s Long Term Care Program. Her professional background originated in Social Work.

Over the past decade, a number of mission-related accomplishments have taken place under her leadership while also being instrumental in changing the way government agencies, health care professionals and individuals view cancer and their role in preventing it. She has been very successful in attracting donors and corporate supporters to contribute to cancer support programs and prevention initiatives.

Barbara is currently the Chair of the Prevention Working Group for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation 2020 initiative—The Future without Breast Cancer. She has authored several publications and studies on planning and resource allocation, which have been developed for use by the BC government and for Health Administration students.

Barbara is also the recipient of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Award 2002, and a provincial Community Achievement award in March 2007 for her work in advancing cancer prevention.

Event sponsored by Deloitte

Emerging Health Leaders (EHL) and Health Care Leaders Association of BC (HCLABC) entered into a strategic partnership in June 2008. We are happy to partner with such a strong organization — a province-based health leadership organization that is one of a kind across the country. The intent of the partnership is to increase membership in both organizations, collaborate on leadership development and networking events, inform EHL members of HCLABC's role, and generally strengthen both organizations.
