Six-Sigma, Kaizen, TPS, 5S, LEAN? Whatever you call it, is it real improvement or consultant soup? What is it and why is everybody doing it? This interactive session took a lighter look at LEAN. With increased financial constraints we are continuing to use Toyota’s leaning concept across the health sector.

Strategic Organizational Transformation — How to Transform Health Systems? Why Consolidation?
September 22, 2010
Thanks to all those EHL members that joined us at our last event. It was a great turnout with lots of connections made. Dalton's presentation was excellent plus he was able to tie it into the Vancouver Coastal and Fraser Health consolidation. There was a lot of great questions and discussion among the members. The session concluded with a challenge to all attendees to try and implement some of the concepts into their work and see how it can improve planning. Thanks to all those who came out and we hope that you can make it out to our next event.

The Changing Face of Collective Bargaining in the Health Sector
March 29, 2010 Columbia-Chilcotin Rooms at HEABC’s office, 200-1333 West Broadway, Vancouver
Another successful event! On March 29th, Marno McInnes discussed the importance of labour relations in the health care system to Emerging Health Leaders. Mr. McInnes is Vice President Health Authority Services & Negotiations at the Health Employers Association of BC (HEABC). He is responsible for leading a team that provides human resource, labour relations, and compensation services to the province's health authorities.
After a short introduction of his team, he highlighted the history and structure of collective bargaining. This laid the foundation for the rest of the session. Discussions ensued around unionization, benefits, productive hours, and the need for evidence-based decision-making.
Mr. McInnes also shared upcoming changes to the collective agreement. The focus of bargaining over the next few years will be structured around total compensation and productivity, making the system more accountable, and sustainability.
Please find attached the slides from Marno’s presentation. We feel that slide 10 is a good picture of the evolution of collective bargaining in health care in BC.
Speed Networking

This EHL event was held at the James Bond inspired Shakin Not Stirred restaurant. There we met many new and familiar faces to EHL who practiced the art of speed networking. The format involved encounters of three minutes that included business card exchange. There will be plenty of other opportunities for EHLers to network with one another in future events. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Leadership Development Session with Lisa Kershaw, Partner, Ray & Berndtson
November 27, 2008
We had a great career building session with Lisa Kershaw. Lisa shared her insight and experience she has gained through her 17 years of experience in business and executive search. She emphasized the importance of having a goal - even a goal for three to five years out is important. She talked about career progression and encouraged us to have some change every two to three years and that overall through a career one progresses from operational roles, managing people and money, to more strategic leadership roles ideally. Lisa also encouraged us to 'dress for the position you want, not the one you have'! She gave us practical advice for resume writing and interviewing. This was a very interactive and useful session. Thank you Lisa!
Leadership Development Session with Barb Stoddard
25 June 2008
Vancouver, BC
We were very pleased to have Barb Stoddard join us for a conversation about leadership in health care. Barb is the Director of Medical Administration at the Richmond Hospital (part of Vancouver Coastal Health); she also holds an academic appointment at Royal Roads University in the School of Leadership Studies.
Barb shared her wisdom and stories with us in an open dialogue. She talked about the value of trusting yourself and listening to your inner voice. She challenged us to take time to think on a regular basis, instead of being absorbed in constant doing. She encouraged us to be forgiving of ourselves in making mistakes. Barb emphasized the importance of soliciting people's contribution. She sees great importance in asking questions - especially questions to which you don't know the answer.
Lastly, Barb read an excerpt from a book she recommends, Orbiting the Giant Hairball: A Corporate Fool's Guide to Surviving with Grace, by Gordon MacKenzie. Thank you Barb for a successful Emerging Health Leaders event in Vancouver.
Vancouver EHL Launch
24 April 2008

The launch of the Vancouver chapter of Emerging Health Leaders was a great success. Over 30 emerging health leaders attended this inaugural event. We were happy to bring together new and upcoming health leaders in the Vancouver area to form the second chapter of EHL in Canada. The Health Care Leaders Association of BC was a very generous host for our first social networking event.
