Many thanks to the members who came out to engage in the very intimate fireside chat with Michel Bilodeau, CEO of the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario.

Michel reflected quite sincerely on leadership in a dynamic health care environment. Michel gave a detailed description of his career path which started in second-language training with the federal government, and has included positions as a VP of Human Resources in two academic health sciences centres, a notable sabbatical in Paris, and finds him today in the position of CEO of the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario. Michel spoke to his personalleadership philosophies which focused on definingt a clear vision though (and importantly) allowing for flexibility in the way managers choose to achieve their vision. Following his talk, Michel provided EHL members with an opportunity to propose a number of questions relating to management style, work-life balance, and some of the difficult decisions managers are required to make as leaders within their organization.

Emerging Health Leaders Knowledge Series
19 September 2007
SCO Health Service
Ottawa, Ontario

Ms. Kathryn Malette, Ray & Berndston was invited to speak to EHL around a number of leadership issues.

Ms. Malette identified characteristics of successful leaders which included individuals who aspire confidence, inspire followers and believe in a vision. Leaders leave a legacy or a lasting impression on a team or organization.

Ms. Malette recognized the evolving dynamics of workplaces in the 21st century - our work spaces are increasingly multi-generational where individual employees have differing perspectives on everything from authority, to policy and dress codes. It is important for emerging leaders in this environment to take the opportunity to learn from their coworkers. Traditionally, leaders exhibited authority through a command and control type model, whereas now, we see a model where control and authority is shared. Leadership is also focused on team building, where members build trust and develop an environment where conflict or unfiltered discussion is not only acceptable but encouraged.

Ms. Malette concluded her presentation by taking several questions from the audience.

Emerging Health Leaders Annual General Meeting
19 September 2007
SCO Health Service
Ottawa, Ontario

24 Emerging Health Leaders gathered at SCO Health Services for the First Annual General Meeting of Emerging Health Leaders.

Prior to the commencement of the AGM, a tour of the facilities was hosted by Amy Tosh and a member of the Senior Management of SCO Health Services.

The AGM was hosted by co-chairs Emily Gruenwoldt and Adrienne Hagen, who provided an overview of the proposed direction of Emerging Health Leaders (full outline of the plan is included in Appendix A) to members for their information and approval. Recognizing the volume of work required to meet proposed goals, an interim Executive Committee was named by the co-chairs to distribute the workload. It was proposed that this interim Executive Committee be appointed for a one-year term and that a formal nomination and election process be undertaken in 2008.

Unanimous agreement was expressed for the Executive Committee members selected for the one-year interim executive.

  1. Expansion of membership to include interprofessional clinical colleagues. Members were supportive of expanding the membership criteria to include clinical colleagues who are emerging leaders. It was agreed that EHL should be focused on leadership, and not specifically interprofessionalism. Rather, EHL would be an interprofessional organization which addressed leadership issues for emerging health leaders.

  2. Strategies to ensure vehicles for grassroots feedback are available. Ms. Boudreau gathered feedback from members in terms of how they wished to have their voices heard. Members indicated that opportunities to volunteer within the network on specific projects and web tools would be helpful and appreciated. Members were encouraged to provide additional feedback to Ms. Boudreau.

The meeting adjourned at which time Ms. Kathryn Malette, Ray & Berndston spoke about successful leadership characteristics and managing an inter-generational work environment.

PricewaterhouseCoopers Focus Group
1 August 2007
PWC Headquarters

On behalf of the Ontario Hospital Association, PricewaterhouseCoopers hosted eight Emerging Health Leaders in order to engage in a discussion regarding:

  • An assessment of current leadership development offerings for emerging health leaders
  • Insights and suggestions regarding the leadership development needs of emerging health leaders and
  • Critical success factors for an OHA health care leadership institute.

The purpose for the discussion was to support OHA research to enable the establishment of a health care leadership institute to support health care leaders across all stages of their careers. As part of the planning for this leadership institute, the OHA required a comprehensive needs assessment and market research. The focus group was the first and only that focus group lasted for one hour.

CHLNet Focus Group

CMA House
Ottawa, Ontario

Representing CHL Net, Graham Dickson and Don Briscoe hosted a focus group to discuss leadership development opportunities to date in members' careers. The group also conducted a round table on what they considered to be positive leadership attributes, and discussed examples of good leadership and poor leadership.

CHLNet Summit
22 May 2007
Drawing Room, Chateau Laurier
Ottawa, Ontario

On May 22, 2007, the co-chairs of Emerging Health Professionals Network (Adrienne Hagen and Emily Gruenwoldt) were invited to participate in the Canadian Health Leadership Network Summit. This event was organized by CHL Net to flesh out a common leadership competency framework and to discuss elements of a CHL Net business case. Over 100 senior health system leaders representing national health organizations, government, acute care and academic institutions gathered in Ottawa to come to consensus on a the future for CHL Net.

A panel speaking to leadership development opportunities was featured and included Emily Gruenwoldt (EHL Co-Chair), Lori Beach (MHA Resident, University of Ottawa), Dr. Jack Kitts (CEO, The Ottawa Hospital), Bob Smith (Retired Health System Leader), and John King (Vice President, St. Michael's Hospital). Emily addressed the dearth of common meeting areas for young health professionals, which ultimately lead to the creation of the Emerging Health Professionals Network. The terms of reference were discussed, as was the enthusiasm of EHP Net membership to participate in events such as these, as well as to partner with current health system leaders in a mentorship relationship. The presentation was very well received by the audience.

Additionally, the day featured a presentation from Graham Dickson (Royal Roads University) about the development of a leadership competency framework for the health sector. Summit participants provided significant feedback on the proposed framework through Café style discussions. Through conversations with Mr. Dickson following his presentation, it was agreed that EHP Net presented an excellent opportunity to gain feedback on the framework from future health leaders. EHP Net participants will be able to provide a fresh new perspective on leadership development and leadership competencies that has so far been missing. Graham Dickson and Don Briscoe (CMA) will coordinate the focus group scheduled for June 13th at the CMA.

Both in terms of coordinating the focus group and spreading the word about Emerging Health Professionals Network more broadly to senior health leaders, the event was a huge success.

Emerging Health Leaders Networking Session

Professional Development Luncheon
23 March 2007
Sponsored by the Canadian Medical Association
Canadian Medical Association
Alta Vista Drive, Ottawa, ON

The first formal event launched by EHP Net was hosted and sponsored by the Canadian Medical Association. The keynote address was delivered by the CMA Secretary General and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. William G. Tholl.

Mr. Tholl welcomed participants to the CMA and expressed his sincere pleasure to have been invited to address EHP Net members. In his opinion, a network such as this provides career long advantages to its membership with respect to knowledge transfer, and both formal and informal networking opportunities.

Carrying this theme forward, Mr. Tholl advised of the CMA Strategic Plan as well as the newly formed Canadian Health Leadership Network (CHL-Net). CHL-Net was established to address the looming shortage of Health Leaders in Canada. Mr. Tholl drew parallels between the mission of CHL-Net and the mandate of EHP Net using the analogy of "car pooling." Car pooling is successful when all members share a similar destination, share the same values, share risks and costs, as well as ultimate credit. In any collaborative effort between individuals or organizations, these are the critical success factors. Participants were very impressed by Mr. Tholl's presentation and appreciated his comments regarding CMA's role within the health care landscape.

Following Mr. Tholl's presentation, Monika MacLaren (CMA) offered perspectives on the advantages and disadvantages of working for the Canadian Medical Association.

Inaugural Meeting of the Emerging Health Professionals Network
10 January 2007
Social Restaurant and Lounge
Sussex Drive, Ottawa, ON

The inaugural meeting of EHP Net was called for January 10, 2007 by co-chairs Adrienne Hagen (CMA) and Emily Gruenwoldt (ACAHO).

The purpose of this preliminary meeting was to assess interest in developing a network comprised of locally based (Ottawa Region) emerging health service administrators, researchers, and policymakers.

In total, 25 participants gathered to share their views of how they would see the network evolve in terms of meeting schedules and frequency, topics for discussion, membership, and governance. Terms of Reference were approved. It was agreed that a member profile would be developed in order to share members' employment history and areas of expertise, as well as contact information.
